Welcome Home…

Preserve a major investment: your solid wood door

A solid wood entry door system is a major investment. It can range in cost between $10,000 and $20,000 depending on the wood and the complexity of the system’s design. Periodic maintenance to the finish of the entrance system is critical in order to prevent having to remove the existing finish and doing costly repairs to wood components.

The sun is an enemy of your wood entrance door system

If you invest in a costly wood door, you are unlikely to want to hide its beauty with a storm door, which would offer it protection from the elements. Consequently, an unprotected wood door, especially in sunny exposures, is very vulnerable to rapid deterioration. The varnish will often turn milky, become brittle and start to flake off, especially on the rail elements. Once the varnish begins to fail, moisture is the next intruder, accelerating the degradation of the varnish and the wood itself. You begin to notice that the wood turns gray in color. If these conditions are allowed to continue, wood elements will warp and eventually rot.

Arrest the deterioration and restore the beauty of your wood door

When the coating has failed, it must be stripped. This is a messy, costly, but necessary step to stop the door from deteriorating further and bring back its natural good looks. If rot has attacked wood elements, they must be restored with epoxy or replaced with new wood. Weather stripping also has to be inspected closely and replaced at any sign of failure.

Periodic maintenance of your wood doors is key

If your door system is in a sunny exposure, it is essential to have your door inspected every two years for signs of the varnish beginning to crack, especially on the rail elements. If so, the door must be cleaned and the varnish sanded in those failing areas. We then add some stain to the distressed areas and re-varnish the door. That process is rather inexpensive, compared to the cost of stripping the finish and starting over. Plus, your door gets to look great all year!
