Ceiling Glitter Gun for Popcorn Ceilings

As house painting contractors and decorative painting specialists, we are sometime called on to restore older decorative finishes. A new client from the far Northwest suburbs of Chicago recently made such a request. He has a gold-glittered popcorn ceiling on a high ceiling in his living room. The finish is over forty years old and he has enjoyed it for all the twenty years he has lived there. An unsightly water stain appeared on the ceiling before he had the roof replaced, which prompted him to seek to have his ceiling restored; gold glitter included!

After speaking to my colleagues Joel Hamberg from Oregon and Mark Coley of Connecticut, as well doing a couple of hours of research on Google, I was able to gather all the information I needed to tackle this ceiling restoration, which will take place in February. The most challenging part of the research was to find a manufacturer that still made glitter guns. The first one I found was a hand-operated version. However, it turned out that although still displayed on the web, the manufacturer had stopped making it. Determined to find one, I finally stumbled across a pneumatic version on page twenty-one of my Google search; and it is a beauty! It is operated in conjunction with a compressor and comes equipped with two different ceramic tips. It arrived yesterday with the gold glitter I need. Wow, I am ready to go!

Art Deco Adirondack Chair

The passion flower was used as the central motif of our painting. There are about 500 species of passion flowers (Passiflora) and are found all over the world. There are nine species that are native to the United States. The plants generally grow as vines, although there are shrub varieties as well.

The passion flower got its name not from reference to love, but to the Passion of Christ. Legend has it that a Jesuit scholar living in Italy in the early 1600’s, upon viewing drawings of the flower, had a vision likening the parts of the flower to the elements of the Crucifixion.

Incorporating “period” motifs into contemporary settings is part of Painting in Partnership’s commitment to historical restoration and preservation. Art Deco is one of those period design styles. It originated in France in the 1920’s and flourished in America through the end of World War Two. The Art Deco style influenced architecture, industrial design, decorative finishing, graphic arts, film and even fashion.

Decorative Finishing Techniques Embellish Cast Plaster

Plaster and decorative painting are allies in the world of decoration. Cast plaster ornaments have long been used in a myriad of ways to adorn simple surroundings with a touch of elegance or, outright opulence in the case of some public buildings and private residences. At Painting in Partnership, we often use decorative painting techniques to embellish such plaster elements, like in the picture below. The decorative finishes can be more subtle like in this picture or stronger, depending on the effect needed.

Chicago-based Decorators Supply, Co. has been manufacturing such plaster ornamentation for over a century and distributing it all over the world. In fact, the company was founded in 1883 and became one of the main suppliers of moldings for the buildings at the Columbian Exhibition in 1893. This giant World’s Fair attracted to Chicago scores of sculptors and artisans from all over Europe. This rich pool of talent helped Decorators Supply, Co. develop, over a period of four decades, a fantastic array of original carvings that are still used today to create all the company’s molds and casts.

Storage Trays for Carvings

This unique and rich artistic legacy of over 11,000 walnut and oak carvings is kept in a vault at Decorators Supply. Each carving is mounted on a piece of 3-ply board. They are catalogued and stored on wood trays that are stacked from floor to ceiling in the vault. I recently had the privilege of visiting this vault. It is truly an amazing sight! In 1896, William Grage Sr. joined the company as an office boy and he eventually became the owner of the company. Koi fish, with their big eyes, soft mouths, colorful skins and inviting demeanor, were perfect subjects for Painting in Partnership’s decorative painting project. our color design consultant, mural painter and decorative finisher all worked as a team to create this colorful mural design.

Faux-Painted Koi Pond Bench

We painted a mural scene of seven Koi fish in a pond, complete with lily pod leaves, water bubbles and water droplets painted on the leaves in realistic trompe l’oeil fashion. To add a whimsical touch, our muralist painted her hand holding a brush, while putting the final paint stroke on a fish. We then applied a decorative metal finish to the arms and back of the bench to complete the painting.
